 Areas of expertise

Tourette Syndrome - Brain Activity - Cognitive behavioral therapy.

Profile

Marc Lavoie studies the association between cognitive processes and brain activity (evoked potentials) mainly in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, but also in anxiety disorders and especially in obsessive-compulsive disorder. He collaborates with researchers from the Research Center on different projects:

  • identifying physiological changes followingcognitive behavioral therapy ;
  • determining the impact of perceived emotions on the memory of people with schizophrenia.

Research Interests

Since the last fifteen years, Professor Marc Lavoie studies the link between cognitive processes and cerebral activity (event-related potentials), primarily in Tourette’s syndrome, but also in anxiety disorders (especially obsessive-compulsive disorder).

He works closely with the psychological intervention teams in order to identify the physiological changes that occur following cognitive behavioral therapy. He also develops various projects to study the effect of perceived emotions on the memory of schizophrenic patients.

He is currently head of the Cognitive and Social Psychophysiology laboratory, at the research center of the Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Montréal (Psychiatric University Institute of Montreal). The cognitive and social psychophysiology laboratory contain several platforms that specializes in multimodal electrophysiological recordings, mainly from the cerebral and other peripheral measures such as pupillary response, eye movements, heart rate, respiration and muscles.

These signals are recorded during cognitive task related to motor inhibition, memory, attention or emotional response activation and also during social interactions or during virtual reality immersion, addressing crucial issues about the relationship between brain functions, behavior and cognition in various neuropsychiatric disorders.
