Profil

Sonia Lupien est directrice scientifique du centre de recherche de l’Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal. Elle s’intéresse aux effets du stress au cours d’une vie et a mené des études chez les enfants et les jeunes adultes. Ses études ont démontré que même les enfants sont vulnérables aux effets du stress, et que certains sécrètent des taux élevés d’hormones dès l’âge de 6 ans. Ses études chez les jeunes adultes l’ont menée à démontrer les effets aigus et chroniques des hormones de stress sur la mémoire et la régulation des émotions. Enfin, ses études sur les populations âgées ont permis de démontrer les effets néfastes du stress chronique sur l’hippocampe, une région impliquée dans l’apprentissage et la mémoire.

Dans le cadre de ses nouveaux projets de recherche, elle s’intéresse aux différences hommes/femmes quant à la réactivité au stress et à ses effets sur la mémoire et la régulation des émotions. Elle a mis sur pied le programme Dé-Stresse et Progresse pour donner des moyens aux enfants de faire la transition entre l’école primaire et l’école secondaire, une période au cours de laquelle les enfants sont grandement vulnérables au stress. Son équipe travaille maintenant à l’adapter pour les adultes en milieu de travail. Elle est titulaire de la Chaire sur la santé mentale des hommes et des femmes des Instituts canadiens de la santé des hommes et des femmes. Elle est aussi la fondatrice et directrice du Centre d’Études sur le stress humain qui a pour mission d’éduquer le public sur les effets du stress sur le cerveau et le corps en utilisant des données validées scientifiquement.
